Dr. Rick W. Bassett is the chairman of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, Texas. Dr. Bassett attended Harvard University and graduated Magna Cum Laude. Afterwards he completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at the Mayo Clinic specializing in total joint replacement. During this time he also received a Master’s Degree in Orthopedic Biomechanical Engineering.
Dr. Bassett is known for joint replacement patents and his pioneering work in prosthetic designs. He has been the primary surgeon on three knee replacement and one hip replacement implants. He has performed more than 15,000 joint replacement surgeries in his career. Dr. Bassett is the author of more than a dozen publications and regularly speaks on the subject of joint replacement techniques and prostheses at local, national, and international conferences. He has lectured and done surgery on 5 continents.
Dr. Bassett also currently serves as the Director of Joint Replacement Surgery at the Valley Baptist Medical Center where the Joint Commission recently awarded a Center of Excellence Certification in Joint Replacement for the fourth straight year. He also is a clinical professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of Texas Regional Academic Center. At this time he works on improving patient's recovery from surgery using minimally invasive surgical techniques.
